The WHY with Carrie
A Note From Carrie
I didn’t build InPowerED from a boardroom. I built it from a kitchen table covered in bills and a heart that wouldn’t quit. Right before my 23-year marriage ended, I found myself on welfare with very little spousal support, trying to figure out how to become the full-time, sole provider for my family—fast before the divorce.
I had skills—years of freelance PR, storytelling, and partnership building—but I didn’t have a clear path to “employable.” I needed the language employers use, the tools they expect, and, most urgently, health insurance for my kid. I learned how to translate my scrappy, do-what-it-takes experience into a resume that would pass the first screen, land interviews and solidify job offers. I learned how to set SMART goals that were Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound—because survival required a plan, not just grit. As I navigated the welfare system while trying to find work, I realized that there was no bridge from poverty to sustainability. I vowed that I would fix the system in my local community. As I became employed over the years, I kept my Medicaid card in my wallet as a reminder of both the safety net that kept us afloat and the promise I made to climb out.
That journey is the blueprint for InPowerED.
In collaboration with Utah Valley University, we created a seven-week, career-essentials track that teaches exactly what I needed then: current workplace tools, real-world practice, coaching, and a community that says, “You’re not alone. We’ll walk with you.” And because a training without a paycheck is a broken bridge, we added a placement agency that connects graduates directly with Utah employers ready to invest in their growth—so moms can move from surviving to thriving, with income, benefits, and a future.
InPowerED is the program I wished existed the day I chose to start over.
It’s the hand I needed on my back when I felt like I was falling. It’s proof that divorce-driven poverty doesn’t get the final word—that with the right skills, support, and opportunities, single mothers can provide for their families as loyal, high-value employees and rebuild lives they’re proud of.
I built this so no mom has to white-knuckle that bridge alone. We are in it together.
